Favorite Female Lyricists #3 - Poe

We have, as I like to say, reached the podium, #3 in my Favorite Female Lyricists series. The Bronze Medal spot belongs to singer/songwriter Poe.
Born Anne Decatur Danielewski, Poe took her stage name after dressing as Edgar Allen Poe for a costume party as a teen. She is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and provided voice talent in the video game Apocalypse (she plays Bruce Willis' character's girlfriend.) Her songs have appeared in movies such as Anywhere But Here, Stir of Echoes, Great Expectations, Gossip, and X-Men 2. She has also contributed songs to Delerium's Rhys Fulber's side project, Conjure One.
Poe's lyrics are often of an intimate nature, and include subjects such as allusions to film and literature, references to comic books, and psychological ironies. Her second album, Haunted, utilizes lyrics that allow her to put her late father to rest, as well as incorporating themes from her brother Mark's novel The House of Leaves. The album has been compared to Pink Floyd's The Wall (Los Angeles Times,) and Radiohead's Kid A (All Music Guide.)
It probably didn't hurt that I was making out at the time, but I fell in love with Poe the first time I heard her. I've loved trying to decipher her lyrics over the years (which I'm still doing, I'm afraid to say.) She's one I'll never tire of listening to. (I've seen her twice as well . She's really good.

It probably didn't help that she couldn't release any new music for seven years.

I have heard the name, like I was reading what some people commented here, it appears you have written about her before, that sounds right.. That must have been it.. Though I feel like I have heard of her before that as well. Anyways, I just listened to the song, sounds really good, quite the voice on her! She's also quite the looker, haha :)

@teamfreak16 Very vivid memory, that's good! Also, wow, I'm jealous that you have seen Depeche Mode.. Just curious what year, approximately did you see those guys? That must have been a great concert, through and through!

@mawdest - I saw the Violator tour at Red Rocks with Nitzer Ebb opening, and the Exciter tour at a different Denver amphitheater. With Poe.

That she is. I still remember the green shirt she wore when I saw her open for Depeche Mode. She's hot.

I like "Angry Johnny." Such a great line: "I wanna kill you, I wanna blow you........away."

Might as well give her a shot. The worst that can happen is that you don't like it.

I know you have featured Poe before. She was played on alternative radio here back in the 90s.

Here too. The alternative station out of Ft. Collins played the hell out of "Angry Johnny."

Ah yes it is interesting how what we are doing at the time pairs with different music, sounds, locations and shapes how we feel about them
