Why oh why do I do it? Because I can.
But that's not the pressing question in this next song on my countdown of my favorite country songs that have a who/what/why question for its title. There's a whole set of similarly-themed rock songs that I did earlier if country isn't your thing. And this probably won't be, but here it is.
#3: Why Not Me - Judds
Amid all that "urban cowboy" pop country in the early 80s a backlash began, a turn toward more traditional-sounding country music. It began with George Strait and Ricky Skaggs, then it seemed like everyone was going back to their country roots. That's when the Judds -- a mother and daughter duo from Ashland, Kentucky -- appeared on the scene.
It was a case of being in the right place at the right time. Any earlier or later and the notion of trying to have a country sound would have been anathema and they wouldn't have hit. But they did.
And oh, what a great song by two classic songwriters (Harlan Howard and Sonny Throckmorton) they hit with! This is a song about a woman trying to get the attention of a hometown boy who "had to see if the world was round" now that he's back.
Naomi (the mom) retired from touring due to health problems. Wynonna has enjoyed a successful solo career.
Why Not Me
Written by Harlan Howard, Sonny Throckmorton, and Brent Maher
Recorded by the Judds
From Why Not Me, 1984

But the mom was hotter than the daughter. A rarity.

@JohnRoberts -- honestly, I don't care for them, either. I do love this song, but most of their other stuff is meh. It says something when the parody (Pinkard & Bowden's "Mama She's Lazy") is better than the original.
In the tradition of Homer and Jethro came the riotous barnyard humor and song parodies of Sandy Pinkard and Richard Bowden. They began writing songs together...

When I pulled country shifts, I played them all the time.
