Our unjust justice system

A relative of my DIL, I'll call him Tim, is going to trial next month and may be going to prison. He is only 21. Tim accidentally cut off a pickup truck and the driver chased him, forcing him to pull over and denting his rear fender. Tim reported this to 911 as he drove. Three men and one woman got out of the truck and approached Tim, cursing at him and threatening to beat him up. Tim reached under the front seat and pulled out his gun to protect himself, hoping that the people would not hurt him. The police arrived and promptly arrested Tim. The people who threatened Tim were not charged and now Tim is on trial, looking at 15 years in prison if he is judged guilty. Those are the facts as I was told. Do you think it is fair for Tim to be the only one charged in this instance? Granted, it was stupid to be carrying a gun in his car since he lacked a concealed carry permit. It was stupid to use the gun to deter his would-be assailants. It was dumb to not take off when the people got out of the truck. So many things he could have done to try to avoid a confrontation but he didn't. What do you think? I think our justice system is being very unjust in this case.

The people who threatened him should also have been charged.

I think so but he was the one with the deadly weapon. It's so sad. He's such a nice kid.

They should be charged with menacing at the very least.

I would think so but apparently the law saw it differently. You have to admit if you were the officer coming up on a scene where a man was holding 4 people at gunpoint you might not believe him if he said he felt threatened. I hope his lawyer truly wants justice and isn't just an overworked young inexperienced one.

I hope all of that comes out in the trail as that is not fair to him at all.

I hope so. He has a clean record and if he needs them there are lots of upstanding people willing to testify as to his character. Road rage has made people throughout the country fearful for their lives and I'm sure a lot of drivers carry some kind of protection. It's a real shame they should have to.
