I am glad that we have fossil fuel to use today.
In the past, they killed whales for oil. If not for the discovery of fossil fuel, the killing of whales would continue until all whales extinct.
When I read Moby Dick in my youth, I just did not comprehend the killing of whales on a massive scale just for the sake of getting oil out of it.
When I read the same book a couple of years ago, I started to understand the environment impact of the destruction of whales on such a massive scale.
Today many people boycott shark fin soup because they want to save the sharks.
In the days of Moby Dick, there was no way to boycott the usage of oil to light lamps unless the people were too poor to afford it.

I watched the documentary The Cove. It is sad to see that dolphins are hunted and caught. I think human beings are greedy. They take more than they can offer. It is hard to have the balance except for there will be a serious law and punishment to it.

I remember when it was still legal to kill whales, I think. I may be wrong. My family went on a road trip through New England here in the states in 1966 and my brother ordered whale steak at a restaurant. They assured us that it was actually from a whale. I thought nothing of it back then but the thought of eating whale now is horrifying. They are gentle, intelligent creatures that hurt no one. I had a plain hamburger, I wasn't into trying new foods, and I'm glad I did not order the whale!
