Former Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman James Loney, 32, has signed a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. Loney tried to make the Texas Rangers baseball team during spring training in 2017 before he was released on March 27, 2017. Loney is a 11 year veteran of the Major Leagues will provide an insurance policy with the Tigers during the 2017 baseball season since he will likely be sharing first base duties with Miguel Cabrera who is battling a back injury. Since Loney was not employed by any team in the Major Leagues after he was released on March 27, he will be spending time in the Tigers minor league system so he can regain his hitting groove.

I thought he was still with the Dodgers.

Loney left the Dodgers to play for the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Mets before he signed a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers.

I am surprised he didn't stick with Texas since as backup to Napoli. He is still a useful player.

The report from Rotoworld said his batting average during Spring Training was not good enough to keep him on the roster.
