Here we are at #6 in my Favorite 70's Rock Songs series, inspired by a 70's rock countdown that @TRBRocks420 did not too long ago. The sixth spot belongs to "La Villa Strangiato" by Rush. Formed in Toronto, Canada in 1968, rock trio (bassist/keyboardist/vocalist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer/percussionist Neil Peart) have, with 24 gold, 14 platinum, and three multi-platinum albums under their belts, sold more than 40 million records worldwide. The Recording Industry Association of America ranks them 80th with 25 million albums sold in the US. They have won nine Juno (the Canadian equivalent to the Grammy's) awards. Rush is in the Rock and Roll, Canadian Music, and Canadian Songwriters Halls of Fame, and all three members were the first rock musicians made Officers of the Order of Canada. You just knew some prog had to pop up here at some point, and at 9:37, "La Villa Strangiato (an Exercise in Self Indulgence)" is a 12-part, instrumental exercise in prog rock at it's finest. With multiple tempo changes, the musicianship is top notch (Lifeson's guitar play in particular is stellar throughout.) The piece closes out Rush's 1978 album, Hemispheres, which, although it took 15 years, is certified platinum. Rush has had many hits, both chart-wise and radio play, over the years. As far as I'm concerned, "La Villa Strangiato" is as good as anything they've ever done. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

Hey!!! If it's an instrumental I can't make fun of Geddy Lee's voice!! Did watch the live version, back when they all had long hair?

Yes, I've watched it. I should have used it, but went studio instead.

Didn't take to this one, I don't think Rush can count me amongst their fans

That seems to be the consensus around here. I seem to be about the only one that likes them.
