Hi myLotters, hope you are all having a good time. In my past posts I have spoken about Madikeri and Mysore regions. Its time for me to tell you about North karnataka’s dance forms. North Karnataka is known for its various delicacies, warriors, kings and queens. It is also the birth place for many comedians who have made their names. 1. Jaggahalige Kunitha - This is a folk art of the Hubballi Dharwad region , which is performed on occasions such as Ugadi and Holi. The performance involves about 15 people marching in a procession with the instruments. The jagghalige is a percussion instrument made from a bullock cart wheel wrapped in buffalo hide, the kanihaligi, made of clay and covered with calf hide played by the choreographer. The kanihaligi is much smaller than the jagghalige. 2. Karadimajal - This is popular group folk music in north Karnataka, performed during occasions and in processions. The karadi or karade is the percussion instrument used by the group. It is a palm-sized cymbal producing metallic sounds, and the shehnai produces the melody. 3. Krishna Parijatha - Krishna Parijatha is theatre popular in North Karnataka. It is a combination of Yakshagana and Bayalata, portraying stories or scenes from the Mahabharata. 4. Lavani - This folk dance of Maharashtra is also present in some parts Karnataka. This is all for today, in my next continuation post I will let you know about Dakshina Kannada. The image is from google showing Jaggahalige kunitha
