My Brother Helped Rescue A Three Year Old Locked In a Lotto Booth

Last week there was a kind of quiet drama in front of our house. A 3 year old has locked herself into a Lotto booth by closing a tower bolt from the inside of the door. The Lotto booth was rented to a family of two sisters and a brother in law. The sisters worked in shifts and each had children that accompanied them. These children were kept inside the booth while tickets were sold to the public. The mother came outside the booth to purchase some snacks and soft drinks and when she returned the child has slip the tower bolt closed. Her frantic coaxing and calling and begging for the child to open the door was unsuccessful. The child was answering but did not seem to understand why she was locked in. Or that she could open the tower bolt from the inside. After about 5 minutes, my brother and a man drinking in the bar took a wrecking bar and tried to pry the solid steel door open. After much effort they were able to breach the door. The child was rescued but has turned fiery red with all the commotion. Later the door was fixed so that the place could be locked. Lotto booths have a lot of cash available, especially when they have to pay people if they have won small bets. Here were some of the questions that was raised: 1. Was it an accident and the child just learn to close the door from watching others do so? Is that possible? 2. Was the mother negligent to leave the child alone? Should she have taken the child with her? 3. The father could not be reached as he had gone to the city to conduct business…and keep his phone turned off. 4. The mother did not want to call the police or fire department for help because she was scared of her husband reaction, and she did not want people to know. What do you think? What would you have done? Happily this incident ended with a good ending…but it could have easily been a tragedy.

Sometimes relationships are funny here. Good parenting is not a strong feature among some couples...and it is not based on friendship but fear and violence...which seems to be quite acceptable to some couples...especially Trinidadian African couples. It's a twisted kind of love.

Why in the first place she is afraid of her husband , she should be open about anything to her husband , at least that much friendliness should be there, Glad that the child is okay , I would have told my husband everything what ever has happened, and would have called the fire department in the first place.

It was hard to figure the mother's reaction. I think the mother seem to be less than responsible ...there were incidents before ...little things...like forgetting to lock up for the weekend and frequenting bars with the child etc.The husband also seems strange...why have a phone if you always keep it turned off? This is not an ideal couple...but this is behavior is better than their parents. So, who knows? Couples settle things with physical violence here... This is not my lifestyle, nor my family lifestyle...we live and let live.

If you ask my opinion, the mother was negligent cause as a rule, never leave a child unattended.

Sometimes toddlers are so curious. He must be locked himself up while playing. I hope it is just an accident scenario. However, it should be supervised closely by the mother.

@Gita17112016 I haven't seen the real situation. But then, toddlers should be supervised closely by their biological mothers.

There is that possibility...that the child was just curious and that's why people are willing to accept that it was accidental. Thank you.

"These children were kept inside the booth while tickets were sold to the public. " - so it has been a longstanding practice with no prior incidents? how old were the other children?

The other child is 4 or 5 years old. And yes, the children are kept with the mother...they even allow them in the bar to socialize with the people who are drinking. It's a strange kind of culture that is acceptable to their family...There is no one to babysit the children.

Different cultures and different ethnic groups have different practices that are acceptable to them. But if I were a mother, no, I would never leave my child alone in an small booth.

Leaving a 3 year unattended. This seems ridiculous to me. It is the mom's fault. She should have been more attentive. I cant believe that she refused to call the police for fear of her husband. Rescuing the child is more important than the frustration of her spouse
