Is sugar good for bamboo plants?

I had seen some people in the bamboo plant kept in glass jar put in some sugar in the water. I am wondering is the small amount of sugar helpful for the growth of bamboo plants. Generally some leaves of bamboo plants turn yellow after few months.

Thanks Adityaji. Actually plants by photosynthesis produce starch. If sugar is put in the water it is certain it will not damage the plant.
