Recently, when I was counting down music plane crash victims, I found it so interesting that I decided to continue with the road. We are at #4 in my Music Vehicular Deaths series, Falco.
Born Johan "Hans" Holzel, Falco was an Austrian singer/musician/wrapper. Particularly popular in the 1980's, Falco was planning a comeback when he died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in 1998.
Just 13 days shy of his 41st birthday, Falco was vacationing in the Dominican Republic when his rental car, a Mitsubishi Pajero, collided with a bus between Villa Montellano and Puerto Plata.
Falco died of severe injuries. The singer was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine at the time.
An international star, Falco was best known in the States for his hits "Der Kommissar" (which was actually made popular here by the band After the Fire,) "Rock Me Amadeus," and "Vienna Calling." With "Rock Me Amadeus," Falco was the only German-as-main-language artist to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with a vocal record. With over 60 million total records sold worldwide, he is the most successful Austrian artist of all time.
And frankly, it was a blast listening to the guy.

Falco was solid 80s. He was played alongside the new wave/synthpop/alternative acts.

I loved it when they played him in the clubs.

The hills are alive with the sound of Falco...... (I had to look up and see if there were actually any other Austrian singers who'd become successful in the US, and waddaya know the Von Trapps were from Austria! Rock me Amadeus and climb every mountain!!!)
I have to admit to being more fond of ATF's version of "Der Kommissar," but I do like Falco's for a change every now and then.

I think "Vienna Calling" was my favorite of his songs.
I remember the news report when he was killed, and how disappointing it was to hear that he was under the influence at the time.
