You Don't Expect to Die at a Pop Concert. You Shouldn't Expect to Die at a Pop Concert.

The terrorist attack at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester this evening deeply bothers me, maybe even more so than any other attack that's happened in recent years. Those were teenyboppers at that concert. Teenagers and preteens and children going to a pop show with their friends or parents. Young people with their whole lives stretched out ahead of them.
And now their lives will never be the same. Nineteen are dead and at least 50 are injured. Those who survived will likely be scarred for life.
Maybe it bothers me so much because I was once a teenybopper, and most of the characters in my stories are teenybopper girls obsessed with pop stars. You don't expect this type of thing to happen at a concert. You shouldn't have to worry about it happening, no matter what your age is. Nobody deserves to have this horror happen to them. Nobody should have to worry that they might get killed if they go to a concert -- or anywhere public. Or anywhere at all. This crap needs to stop. It's gone on long enough, and these types of attacks should never happen at all.

I went to see Marshall Crenshaw -- hardly a "wear bike club colors and carry weapons" singer -- earlier this year and got searched with a wand. There are lots of places and politicians trying to, while you cannot eliminate the risk (we just passed the 90th anniversary of the Bath School House bombing,...yes, 90th, as in, it happened in 1927), minimize the possibility.
But some people don't want vetting and more stringent admission policies in this country.....

You make a good point; these kinds of attacks have been going on for decades, perhaps centuries. I for one prefer higher security when going somewhere. It may be an inconvenience for me to empty out my purse before being admitted to an event, but at least they know I don't have any weapons on me. And I think we do need more stringent vetting when allowing people into our country.
