My Grandma Can't Breathe

My grandmother has been telling me that since the last time she had to be hospitalized in Texas that she needs oxygen tanks and machines in order to breathe. I couldn't imagine what that must be like for her until I went to visit her this past week and a half. She can barely get from one room to another in her small apartment without being absolutely without breath. And the site of her gasping for air like a fish out of water almost left me in tears. She can not breathe on her own and so she is stuck in her apartment for most of her days not leaving unless absolutely necessary and when she does she needs to take oxygen tanks with her. It is frightening to think of her being alone most of the day with my uncle not around to help her because he works. And her junky husband abandoned her because she refused to give him money for crack. I am trying the best that I can from here in Maryland to help her get a home health aid or to be placed in a facility where she can be helped 24/7. She said she would even go to an old folks home just so that she has the help and the social interaction she craves while being locked up in her apartment. I am afraid of her going to a home because I have seen so much about the abuse of elders in places like that. I have no clue what to do though. She has an appointment for a home health aid worker to come see her but that is May 30th and I hope she can just hang on a little longer till then. I am not ready to lose her. Have any of you had to help with this type of situation? Any advice on how I could possibly help her even though I am in a completely different state?
