Yesterday I took the day off to go to Cincinnati for a concert and to mourn the loss of Gregg Allman. So sad to lose another legend! Let me resume the countdown of my favorite songs with "song" in the title, and this is a song to make you happy.
#3: Song on the Radio - Al Stewart
Yeah! I love Al Stewart. I got to meet him when I saw him in concert a few years ago, and believe me, it was an honor to thank him for the soundtrack that he provided for my teenage years...and later (ever heard "Nostradamus"? Wow!). One of the things I love about Al Stewart is the fact that his music -- which, let's be honest, is mostly soft-rock, folk-rock, 70s singer/songwriter material -- really undermines some dang intelligent lyrics. Yes, this is a "radio-friendly" song...to a point. How many other songs in this era of disco had a line like "It's too much of a gentle misnomer for a shooting star" in them? You're not going to find that while you boogie oogie oogie, yowza yowza, etc.
This was the end, more or less, of Al Stewart's "commercial" success. One more song, 1980's "Midnight Rocks," made the top 40; however, by then, people were punking and new waving and technoing, leaving Stewart's music behind.
He still commands a loyal following, and he's still making great music. And he's a very kind, gracious gentleman who gave us great songs like this to make the soundtrack of the 70s a most memorable one.

I read in Wikipedia that he'll often write four different sets of lyrics for each song. That's some creativity.
