What is the supreme purpose of life?

After all what I have read in books, I have learned that one should live his life in present without caring for future. Future is unseen but present is all we can control. Even though I like this idea very much, but it contradicts what is practical. No matter if we say, we live in present and don't care about future; our all acts are directed with some hopes for future. Being a social, how can we skip our responsibilty to provide a better future for coming generations. Doesn't living in present mean we become selfish and care all about self.

The true purpose of MY life is to help others. I am in recovery from addiction and I do whatever I can to help someone who's struggling to get sober and have a better life. I feel that if I didn't, the past 30 miserable years of my life will have all been for nothing! I work as a substance abuse counselor, I volunteer for charities in my community, I donate goods all the time (I can't afford to donate cash), and I am always willing to lend a hand to someone that needs it. It helps them, it helps me and it makes the world a little brighter for one day...

The thing is to find a balance between caring about the present and the future, sometimes we spend more time imagining how the future is going to be and we forget that we need to enjoy the present. Other times we just dislike our present and want the future come so fast so we can leave all behind.
