My mother was a hamster

...and my father smelled of elderberries I've recently had a conversation that got derailed and seemed to descend into chaos. In an exchange that seemed to take on a life of its own, I got the distinct feeling that I was caught in a sequence that I'd seen in the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I can only shake my head and laugh at the result. Have you ever had a conversation where you ended up feeling that you were talking in some sort of Martian language and your best option was to "run away! run away!" ?
Go away you silly English pig-dogs! Go and boil your bottoms! I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberri...

I love Monty Python.. my old roommate used to be big into making our life very Monty-Python-esque.. it was one of the funnest years of Apartment living I ever had.

I was lucky to get to see John Cleese awhile back when he came to Portland to present an hour-long stand-up performance. He was really great! There were all sorts of bits I'd never heard of, historical stuff, like the stories about how Monty Python formed. I thought his family history very interesting too.

@minx267 Yes they were! I used to roll on the floor laughing at the comedy back then.

I'm with Jj, I want to see it all...I have had conversations that leave me scratching my head, I figured it was my fault, not listening until it was too late.

It's sometimes difficult to pinpoint exactly where such conversations get derailed. Even when both parties are truly listening and trying to communicate, misunderstandings can muddy the original intent and direction.

Tuning out is a very smart response, I think. I generally keep trying to dig myself out and end up just digging myself in, deeper and deeper.

Oh yes I have conversations with the father of one of Big One's friends. He's very talkative and keeps me trapped for ages but at the end of it I have no idea what he was trying to say or whether anything has been decided! Strangely enough though I did actually have the Monty Python moment you quoted once totally out of the blue - must write about that!
