This is a Weird Looking Bird

I must admit, I was very surprised to see this young woodchuck today. There were a couple of ladies walking their dogs a short time earlier in the exact same area I found this guy just resting on the trail. I could tell it was a young one because, even though it stared at me the whole time I was taking its photo, it didn't make an effort to run away. I did, however, make sure to keep some distance between it and me. The last thing I needed to do was go to the hospital because I startled it and got bit.

It's a woodchuck (also known as a groundhog). I was just joking about the bird part.

It's interesting how some critters aren't afraid of humans when they're young. We have Western Fence Lizards everywhere here. The "experienced " ones scurry away. But the very young ones will jump on your hand for the warmth if you encourage them a bit (with a tap behind them).

He was more curious than frightened. He eventually just ended up lying down in the grass.

This is him a little bit later in our encounter. I walked right past him and he decided to lie down.

Are they usually aggressive and bite? I used to see many of them but they would usually run away if humans were close by.

The ones I've seen before usually just run away and I was actually surprised when this one didn't. The only time they are aggressive is if they are cornered. That wasn't the case. This one had plenty of room to run in any direction.

I think you need to have an anti-rabies vaccination for being bit of it.
