Why are kids so afraid of clowns

Some kids in our local children's party ran away from the performing clown. And we heard how someone from the neighborhood refused to take his kids to McDonald's due to the fast food's mascots. Even grown-ups like my office mate don't like clowns and I'm just wondering why. I do understand if they met a Joker wannabe in the street, or some horror clown. I do find them extremely annoying.

@Mamerto32 Gacy was real life killer, rich and a respected member of the community, I read a response below about a " killer clown" novel, think that was based on him. It really stuck with American kids, even parents for decades. I think the present day clown sightings scare still has a Gacy tinge in it.
We have Batman to take care of Heath lol

I guess it's because of the unreal faces and hair that may look funny but scary for the kids. Also some clowns are quite abrupt and loud which scares kids.
My son used to be scared when he was a couple of years old but outgrew the fear in a few months.

Good thing my nephew is not afraid, althought my office mate got upset one time when the party clown scared his son.

@Mamerto32 no point in parents getting upset. It's just a transient phase and it all works out well in the end.

A few months ago, we had a real clown scare. They were supposed to be killer clowns lurking in our area.

Ah I saw that in facebook. Some wiseguy is dressing up as a clown and doing scare jokes. It was both funny and annoying all the same.

I am not afraid of clowns but I don't like them to this day.
I also am paranoid of midgets because when I went to the circus when I was a child, they scared me.

Well it's okay. Sometimes being afraid of something is a part of life. I also have an irrational fears of my own.

It's either they are just afraid of it, or they have watch the thing or the batman the joker, either of those.

You're right. Maybe they saw too much Batman and Stephen King movies.
