Finalizing Our Plans For the Future

We had another meeting with our attorney today to finalize the plans for protecting our assets. We finally decided that we would create a trust. In Connecticut it needs to be a irrevocable trust. We will place our home here and our home in Florida in the trust. We considered very carefully if this was the best step for us and our children and decided that it was. We can still sell either home, we just need to put the proceeds of the sale in the trust. We can then write checks from the trust so we have access to the money from the sale of our home. We made our two youngest children the trustees of the trust in case one of us dies and the other become incapacitated. Our eldest son is the executor of the rest of our estate. This way all the kids have a position of responsibility We will have to go back next week to sign the official paperwork. Then we can relax and just let the five years pass so that everything is safe. One more thing knocked off our list of things we need to do to plan our future.

They are older and have already gone to college. So that is not something we have to worry about anymore.

Thank you, I feel like I have safeguarded our property but at the same time retained ownership and the ability to sell it if the need or desire comes up. An ideal solution.

Sometimes its hard to make these kinds of arrangements but it's worth it. My mother signed her land over to us years ago, but the rest of the estate was a mess.

I have a will and it is all spelled out for everything else but our two main homes were my concern so now they will be safe as long as wee stay healthy for 5 years lol That is the tricky part!!

That is a very wise thing to do indeed. People with assets and properties , should do this, so that when they die, the children knows how to run those assets and who will be getting this and that. At least, they won't be quarreling over the assets anymore when that happens because it is already there in the will.

We want to make sure that our houses go to our children and not to a nursing home to pay for our care.

@BelleStarr Oh, I see. So, you will be at a nursing home when you cannot take care of yourself anymore?
