Day 278
Proverbs 27:9
Proverbs 27:9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.
Everyone likes to be around people who smell good and avoid those who give off a bad odor. You choose your friends the same way. They are pleasant to be around.
As king, Solomon was a man with many counselors. He knew wise counsel when he heard it. He was also a man with many wives and knew those who were pleasant to be around and likened good counsel to good perfume.
As Christians, you also give off an aroma. To those who don’t know Jesus as Savior and Lord, it is an officious odor. To those who know Jesus as Savior and Lord, it is a pleasant odor.
2 Corinthians 2:15 For we are unto God a sweet savor of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
16 To the one we are the savor of death unto death; and to the other the savor of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
When you proclaim the Word of God as you were commissioned to do by Jesus before he went back to heaven, you give off the sweet aroma of Jesus Christ. Those who accept him as Savior and Lord can smell the sweet aroma all over you, and they in turn will be the sweet savor of Jesus Christ when they take the gospel to the people around them.
Are you giving off a sweet odor that makes it pleasant for people to be around you? Or is your odor foul and people are doing their best to avoid you? If you have the sweet savor of Jesus Christ you are both pleasant and officious to those around you. You need to be both to win souls for the kingdom of God.
Let’s pray: Father, let me have the sweet odor of Jesus Christ on me so I might win souls for your kingdom. Let the counsel of the Holy Spirit be my guide when it comes to proclaiming your gospel. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
