I'm looking at my favorite songs that have the word "take" or some variation (not "took," though, that's too much of a variation
) in the title. After yesterday's possible surprise (a Jefferson Starship song), I'm going back to familiarity....in fact, I've used this song before. Here's today's song on my countdown.
#5: Take the Highway - Marshall Tucker Band
This was the top song on my list of favorite southern rock songs. Here it is again. It's got a good chance of showing up if I do a "highway" countdown....or one with the word the in the countdown. Great flute solos? It's there.
Yeah, I love, love, love this song. It's filled with the great soulful emotion that made first-generation southern rock so good...and so diverse (you note that this doesn't sound anything like a Lynyrd Skynyrd song). The nucleus of the band, the Caldwell brothers (Toy and Tommy), were joined by lead singer Doug Gray (the only original member still in the band) and the "secret weapon" that made them completely unique: flautist Jerry Eubanks (who also played saxophone). Tommy died in a car wreck in 1980, which effectively ended the original incarnation. Toy left a year later and died in 1993.
They left a legacy of music that combined blues, rock, country, and jazz into a one-of-a-kind sound.
