It's a pleasant evening here, after the hot weekend (exacerbated by being outside playing Putt Putt all weekend!). I had a great evening, playing with the kids who live next door (as Ernest Tubb used to say, be better to your neighbors and you'll have better neighbors, doggone ya!). Having a nice salad at home, it's time for another song about things we live in. Here's today's entry. #9: This Haunted House - Loretta Lynn One of the biggest influences on a young Loretta Lynn's career was Patsy Cline. The two became fast and close friends when Loretta began making her way up the ladder of success in country music. Sadly, they never got to enjoy a long career together: Loretta had only released three singles in her career when Patsy perished in a plane crash with Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins in March, 1963. Lynn wrote this song, she said, after visiting Patsy's widower, Charlie Dick, and feeling that Patsy's presence and Charlie's sadness were overwhelming presences. Not that Loretta was stretching things: she definitely believes in ghosts, and in fact believes her house in Hurricane Mills is haunted. Her home was featured on an episode of Ghost Adventures on the Travel Channel, and this song was played prominently throughout. The song can be interpreted as someone who's broken up with a love as easily as the reality behind the song: the death of a loved one. Loretta poured her heart and soul into the song, because she lost a friend, too. This Haunted House Written by Loretta Lynn (credited on the label to "Oliver Doolittle," Lynn's husband [sexism was rampant in the 60s, but that's for another discussion]) Recorded by Loretta Lynn From Before I'm Over You, 1964 Each morning finds me crying and alone:

I've stayed at a haunted B&B before. It was really cool. Any updates on her condition?

No. The last I heard was she's out of the hospital and undergoing rehab. Something in my gut tells me she'll never perform again. Strokes and 85-year-olds are not friends.

@FourWalls - That's too bad. To be performing soooo long, and have it end like this? Sad.

@teamfreak16 -- that's what happened to Wilma Lee Cooper and Minnie Pearl, too.

Can't beat real country with vintage Loretta.
