My Dad Won't Take Me to the ER

I called and asked my mom if my dad would take me to the ER and she wouldn't ask him. She just kept saying "it might be a Charlie horse" and acted like I was stupid for worrying. They were getting ready to go to the store and I could tell she didn't want to miss her trip to the store. I guess going to the store is more important. So now I'll have to wait until my boyfriend is awake and ask him to take me. I was hoping to go early in the day so I wouldn't be stuck over there for hours waiting. It's nice to know that my health means nothing to my mom, just because she gets leg pains and doesn't have them checked means that I shouldn't either. I'm not calling an ambulance over this as I've called them for this same reason a couple times already in the past, and they act like jerks about it. I don't have any signs of a blood clot other than slight swelling and pain in my calf. If I were to go to the ER now with these symptoms, the only reason they would check me is because I've recently had surgery. Otherwise they would send me home without doing an ultrasound and say I was fine just by looking at it.

Thanks. Part of me thinks it's probably nothing, but another part is worried that it is something and I won't feel better until I've had it checked. If I can't get to the ER this weekend, I suppose I can always call my vein specialist on Monday and ask if they can do an ultrasound to make sure no blood clots have formed. This is something that really scares me and I've gone to the ER multiple times to be checked in the past, especially since I had two other surgeries in the last year. I've never had a blood clot any of those times so my mom is probably thinking the same now. But this feels different and hurts when I walk. It might just be muscular, as every once in a while I'll have a little muscle spasm, but I won't have peace of mind until I know for sure there's no blood clot.

@Srbageldog You are right to want to go to the ER..I cannot believe these people that are not concerned..yes it could be any number of things but all surgeons tell you to watch for swelling and clots after surgery..nothing wrong with your thinking.

@TiarasOceanView I always get told that by the doctors at the ER too, that it was right to come in and have it checked, because it's better to be safe than sorry. Some of the nurses and physician assistants at the front desk are very rude about it though. I've had them send me home without checking anything because I didn't have any of the physical signs of one (obvious swelling, redness, heat coming from the leg.) One ER doc told me before that if my leg hurts to pinch my toes and see if the color returns to them when doing so. If it does, that means my circulation is fine. So I'm always doing that, even though I don't know if there's any truth to that or not. He may have just been trying to shut me up and get me to go away.

I don't blame you for wanting to get it checked especially after having surgery. My dad can be the same way. Usually, if I ask my dad to take me to take Brayland he'll do it but not for me or Cory unless he feels it's an emergency. It's like they have to deem whether or not it's an emergency as if they're doctors.

@Srbageldog I hate when people act like that. Clearly, all pain is the same.

I hate that they appoint themselves in a position to determine whether we need to get something checked or not. My dad is usually good about giving me rides these days, so I think it was my mom who didn't want him taking me. She thinks that since she hasn't had to have an ultrasound for pain and swelling in her leg (her doctor just gave her water pills,) that I don't need to be checked either.

I am so sorry that your parents don't care about your health-that is really sad. I have parents like yours and it used to hurt me so much. I hope your okay but I would go get checked to make sure everything is okay. I will be praying for you.

Thank you. Yes, my mom's attitude really upset me earlier. My mom has bad swelling in her leg that she won't go to the ER and get checked (although she's seen her primary doctor and they have also not checked for blood clots, just gave her water pills) so she thinks that I don't need to be checked either, I guess. I am more cautious than her and won't hesitate to go to the ER if I even suspect something might be wrong. Fortunately nothing was, but it's better to play it safe.

If you had surgery and you are worried you definitely need to get checked. I am sure the hospitals would rather you did that than you ended up being an emergency and you need the reassurance if all is well.

I got checked and fortunately all is well. :) I had a feeling in my gut it would be, but wanted to be certain and not just assume anything.

Wake him up! A blog clot to the brain and a stroke is nothing to WAIT about, you just had surgery. If he is any part man he will get you to the E.R.

It turned out to be nothing, but I agree, it's always best to check and make sure there's nothing serious going on.
