I am sure that diet plays a part along with good genes and other factors. My mom will be 102 on July 4th.

@1hopefulman Her health in general is excellent, she always ate things like butter, eggs, yogurt, cheese doodles but she never carried extra weight and cooked most things from scratch. She is French Canadian as a matter of fact so maple syrup was in many things.

She passed away at 106, so it might not hurt to hear what she had to say about a healthy lifestyle.

I think being a vegetarian indeed can make us lead a healthy long life. However, because most people are already used to delicious foods that involves meat , having just vegetables is a bit difficult for them . And I am one of them.

My grand - aunt celebrated 100 years a month ago. She lives overseas so I don't know what her diet is like, but her children sent a picture of her taken on her birthday - she was combing her hair and looking quite alert and happy.

Yes, they do claim that people do live longer and are more healthier if you eat a lot more Fruits and Vegetables, and of course especially the organically grown ones are even better yet. I just wish they were not so expensive.

Yes, organic fruit is very expensive. We can only do our best with what we have.

I did a search and it looks like there are more and more persons who live to 100 years and more.. Japan has many centenarians - maybe their diet contributes to that, and also their social contacts and generous pensions.. - well, who knows exactly..

Yes, there are many centenarians and there are many factors that contribute to a longer and healthier life. We do what we can in this world as we await the real life.

My grandmother lived to 96, which is rare in our family. I'm sure genes, diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle contribute to living to a ripe, old age.

For sure! I just found a medical doctor that made it to 102 and he said that good mental attitude beside exercise and a vegan diet helped him.

@1hopefulman I will read it later, but thank you. Definitely true! Also saw a TV program where all the elders had a zest for living and a reason to pop out of bed in the morning, meaning be productive and do what you enjoy.

She reminds me of a woman I met a few times who lived to be, I think, 109. At 103 she was still going to her lake cottage, picking berries and making pies.

Thanks for telling us about that woman! It would be so nice if we could stay healthy till the day we die, no matter the age. But to reach 100 and be healthy would be fantastic.

The old folk ate healthy because they couldn't afford a lot of meat during the depression. My gramps told me her father told her beans were chickens. And she is healthy as a lark. Both of my gramps.

Beans are very healthy. Growing up, it was something we ate. I had this recipe that I sometimes cooked: beans, macaroni and bacon pieces. The whole family loved it.

I am sure her diet was very healthy. There are vegetarians who eat a lot of junk food--they just don't like meat. It depends on the vegetarian. I am a pescetarian which means I eat fruits, vegetables, and fish. What really goes into health, in my opinion, is our diet, our surroundings and our genes.

I agree! Positive mental attitude, exercise, healthy diet and enough sleep are all very important. I would add also a connection with God as even more important. Five fingers, five factors!

@1hopefulman I think Dr. Wareham is right. I don't eat meat. However, I do eat fish. I am working my way to giving up dairy--except for my pizza.
