It was touch and go there for a while: there was a pretty heavy downpour over the eastern part of the city. That's not where we play, however, and we made it through the tournament tonight. In a close one, I came in second thanks to two 29s in the second and third round, giving me a 90 for the tournament. After the tournament comes another song on the list of favorite songs with "before" or "after" in the title. Here's today's song. #6: After the Fire Is Gone - Loretta Lynn & Conway Twitty Like yesterday's song, we have a duet. Unlike yesterday's, however, where one was the obvious star and the other was on the way up, both Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn had established, successful careers when they teamed up for a series of hit duets in the early 70s. Some of them were silly ("You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly"), some of them were covers ("Pickin' Wild Mountain Berries"), but most of them were big hits. That's including this one, which hit the top of the country charts and even went into the mid-50s on the pop chart. It's about two people who are having an affair with each other because "love is where you find it when you find no love at home." They feel guilty ("we know it's wrong for us to meet"), but they maintain the relationship ("each time we say it's the last time, but we keep hanging on, and there's nothing cold as ashes after the fire is gone"). Some quick trivia for you: Conway was Loretta's second duet partner. She had four charted singles with Ernest Tubb, the final one in 1969, two years before this song and the Loretta/Conway duet phenomenon took off.
