Three O'Clock Thrill....NOT

It's almost 4 AM. I'm usually sound asleep at this ridiculous hour of the day. Not this morning, though. About an hour ago I was awakened with one of my smoke detectors chirping. NOT the "get the heck out of the house, it's on fire, women, children, and the Jim Reeves albums first!!!!!!!!!!!" alarm, but that "bet you're tired, so's my battery" three-chirps, then a pause. I went upstairs and checked. No smell or hint of smoke. I checked the online FAQs for First Alert that said it's probably a false alarm caused by anything from a dead/dying battery (so much for these "ten-year battery alarms," these are six months old!!!), or anything from dust to bugs (no, no dust or bugs in this house! ). To be safe, I put a different smoke detector (an 830-square-foot house and I have six detectors....no, I'm not paranoid about fire.....) upstairs. It's been silent. The chirpy detector, now downstairs, is also quiet. With all of the fireworks that have been going off in the neighborhood this week I'm almost surprised that a smoke detector or two hasn't gone off. And, yes, they were shooting them off last night about 10 PM (getting an early start on celebrating the 90th anniversary of Charlie Louvin's birth, I guess....I thought I was the only one who celebrated that....). The fact that the other smoke detector hasn't said a word, coupled with the first smoke detector's chirp-chirp-chirp instead of BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP alarm, makes me think it was a bug, or dust, and not an emergency. The fact that I'm sitting here on my MacBook, telling you this, instead of outside talking to a fireman, should tell you something. My parents had the 45 of the Kalin Twins' big hit, "When." The B-side was called "Three O'Clock Thrill." Sorry, this is not my definition of a "Three O'Clock Thrill." PS -- I'm thankful I have them. I'd rather be here, reporting about a false alarm, than having you sending condolences to my family!! Here's the Kalin Twins' song, which I'd prefer to be thinking about at 3 o'clock in the afternoon......

You lucked out. You might have had to play Burning Down the House or Smoke on the Water.

Sorry you can't sleep. I'm pulling an all-nighter, myself.
