Let's look at this by first watching the following YouTube tutorial on this subject:
What is Open Source Software?

Another link to a Wikipedia article on Open Source Software is available via the following URL address: ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source_software )
OSS is the acronym for this type of source code software or Open Source Software.
VLC and Firefox are both open source and used by millions over the internet.

If this all sounds confusing. It is because most people don't realize that there are two main types of software, closed and open. Open Source is available for free and allows computer programs the opportunity to change the source code to suit their individual preferences unlike most programs that prohibit the unauthorized reverse engineering of their applications and are required by law to accept the terms of the written contract in the disclosure dialog to the end user.
Closed Source software is protected by copyright law and penalties for altering the code is punishable by heavy legal consequences.

The main problem with them is they don't always let you know if and when an update is available that makes the program run better. They also have trouble with compatibility issues of certain types of programs with certain operating systems or browsers. So it is sometimes like a broad based muti-participant group of programmers who try to learn and grow their product.

VLC is the media player that is on my tablet, both cell phones and until recently was on teh desktop. When I had to factory restart the desktop it got deleted. But VLC is probably one of the best made apps/ software around- open or closed source.

I am glad you are enjoying it! I use Windows media player and it came with Windows anyway. If I use my tablet, I think the player is Shockwave, but not certain, the tablet is android.
