Bats: What Do You Know About Bats?

I found a couple things that I decided to share with you about bats. If you go into a cave in Kauchanaburi Province in Thailand, and look up, you will find the Kitti’s hognosed bats. Although they have a wingspan of about six inches they are, in fact, the world’s smallest mammals, judged by weight. They weigh only seven-hundredths of an ounce. Now, go next to Carlsbad Caverns and you will see about 3 million bats of eleven different species exit the caverns in the evening hours. It takes about three hours for the bats to exit the caverns and while they are out, they consume an estimated twenty-five tons of insects. Every summer about twenty million bats congregate in Bracken Cave in Texas. One thing that they all have in common is that they are ALL FEMALE. They have come to give birth. The mystery is why they come to Bracken Cave, and why their mates are still in Mexico, 1,000 miles south, awaiting their return. What do you know about bats?

I like bats. Don't think we get many in the urban bits around here, but they seem to like the canal area. Lots of roosts I guess

My son has a bat house on a tree in his back yard. The bats come out at night and eat all the mosquitos. My brother had a small bat in his downstairs shower a few years ago. It had gotten into his house somehow.

@IreneVincent Some of the new buildings, along the canal, have bat boxes on the side of them, here.

That must have been quite an experience at Carlsbad. I've never been there.
