Best portable game system?

I am looking to buy my 11 yr old son a portable game system for Christmas. Which system do you think would be best? The sales associate as the store I went to said the PSP but the games looked more violent to me. My son has a friend who has the Nintendo DS and he seems to like it. I hope you can give me some good, solid advice so I can make a good choice for him.
