Teamwork Doesn't Work With Someone You Hate

Yesterday was Teamwork Day where students rotate each week to work together as a team for a different project. My son was placed into his so-called "Enemy Henry" team because Henry hated my son and so did my son. They are both arch-enemies. I had asked him the reason why they hated each other but you know kids at the age of 10 years old, they tend to have disagreements and different opinions where both could not agree to each other. Now, everyone has to bring 5 pieces of old newspaper to school in order to weave a newspaper bag for the Teamwork Project. The problem is, Henry refused to let my son to join in his team. Both of them did not complain to the teacher in charge either. Henry kicked my son's leg and warned his team not to teach or talk to my son. Of course my son felt left out and lonesome. As you can see, teamwork does not work with someone you hate. They did their part in weaving while my son was not allowed to weave the newspaper bag. He just sat there and looked sadly. I told my son to bring up this matter in his Teacher-Student Diary in order to let his teacher know about it. Do you think this is unfair?

Yeah, it was unfair indeed. He must have talked to the teacher in charge then and there? Was the teacher not around while the team activity, how she/he didn't notice your son was left out?

Indeed it was unfair. He did not talk to the teacher in charge because he was timid and scared of the teacher and Henry. Yes, the teacher was around but whether she noticed or not, I do not know.

the teacher probably wasn't aware that they have an existing gap. however henry's behavior is disturbing because not only did he kick your son's leg, but the other team members just obeyed his warning to exclude your son. either they think it's normal, or they're afraid of him. will your son's grade be affected if the teacher finds out he did not participate in the group project? if he writes about this in the teacher-student diary, will you be following up how the teacher will handle it?

Those kids are afraid of Henry, maybe he is a bully in school. I don't think so my son's grade would be affected. The teacher and I do Whatsapp each other when problems occurred. However in this case, my hubby suggest that I should stay out , let the teacher and kids resolve through the Teacher Student Diary. Anyway, the teacher had read my son's diary already.

@peachpurple it's good that the teacher is aware, but i still don't think it's okay to let henry get away with it. will he keep behaving this way until they all graduate?

@hereandthere I think Henry will keep behaving that way until the teacher will do something about it.

I think your son needs to inform the teacher. This is not fair to both them.

Of course that is unfair. The teacher should know what happened. I suppose your son will not have a grade for that group work.

The teacher should have noticed this if the class had small number of students

It's so unfair to your dear kid. Here in my country we call this phenomenon as campus-violence, it's a serious problem need to be solved asap.
