Sometimes I Just Really Hate People

Ever find yourself reading people's comments on news stories and immediately regretting it? You'd think I'd learn by now to just not read the comments section but no, I always have to go and get myself riled up. This morning I was reading about how Congressman Steve King wants to take funding from Planned Parenthood and the SNAP (food stamps) program to pay for that stupid border wall. Because it makes sense to take funding from the most vulnerable members of society to pay for something frivolous, right? But that's not even what's gotten me so riled up. No, it's the hateful comments agreeing with him that has made me really hate people. I have never understood the hatred aimed at the poor. I experienced it first hand growing up in a poor family that relied on welfare and food stamps assistance in order to survive. I grew up knowing that my own relatives thought that I and my siblings should not exist. I grew up being shamed by school teachers and classmates who came from middle class (or upper class) families. And I grew up knowing that a person's financial situation does not define them as a person. None of us has the right to decide who should or should not be allowed to exist on this planet. Poverty does not equal worthlessness. But the way non-impoverished people seem to view it -- people who have been privileged by never experiencing poverty first hand -- all of us poor folk are just leeches to society and we're living high on the hog while sucking from the government teet that THEY pay for with their hard-earned taxes. Taxpayers only contribute about $36 a year toward welfare programs, and you pay those taxes even if you're poor. Most people on assistance nowadays work and are taxpayers too. So I don't know why folks with higher incomes seem to think that only THEIR taxes count. I am just sick of all the hate geared at poor people. Nobody in their right mind chooses to live in poverty. There are so many factors that contribute to it. It is harder to get ahead in life when you start out with a bad hand of cards. I don't know how many privileged people I know who can just go out and get offered a good paying job when they're not even looking simply because they have connections, while non-privileged people have a hard time even landing a job interview because they don't have those connections. Privileged people think that because it was easy for them that that's how it is for everyone I guess. Too bad our government representatives don't know what it's like to live in poverty at least once in their life -- then maybe they wouldn't aim so much hatred at the poor. People who have never had to experience poverty should count themselves lucky rather than resenting the poor for needing assistance.

This! So many people think its just so easy for others to get jobs, just because they have one and didnt have an issue getting it. And that those without jobs are just lazy, stupid, and depending on others - willingly! Nope! My mom is 50 and has been working since she was 15. Yet she was getting foodstamps every year for 19years while working because 1 she had my brother and I to feed while paying rent and bills all on her own, and 2 it's life, it happens! Makes me sick how those with even a little bit of money think of those getting help or those who cant get a job quickly. Etc Buttttt.. That's also where the "always stay humble and kind" song comes into my mind. As they could very easily lose what they have and be one of "us" / "them".

@Courtlynn I bet you'd be surprised how many people you who know also receive them. Personally I feel like there should be nothing to be ashamed about for needing some assistance. That's what it's there for. I just hate how society stigmatizes people who need help. Babysitting is definitely NOT a job for a "lazy" person. I used to babysit and it is exhausting. Any job working with kids is exhausting. It takes a lot of energy to keep up with the kiddos. But, I get called lazy for writing and editing for a living. Even though sometimes I can make a crazy amount of money in a short amount of time. But sometimes there's slow periods where there's just no work available. I think people should stop being so judgmental and hope they never need help. But if they ever do need help, god knows I would never judge them.

@Srbageldog exactly. And i know most people i know get help, because most i know have millions of kids they cant afford. It happens. Some on purpose to get/keep assistance. Some becsuse they want a family before its too late and they think things will turn around before they get too much of it.

@Srbageldog yessss! So sickning. I babysit to help family and friends out so they dont miss work cuz they have kids and need the money. (They ALL get foodstamps). But I don't work a job, because of reasons thats nobodys bussiness, so i get little foodstamps. People are so quick to say "why do you have them, you dont need them, stop being lazy and go get a job." Especially people on here. Well first off, if you babysit kids - you are far from lazy. Especially when you're me and actually do stuff with them. And second, nobody here knows me personally to say what i need or dont need. Its so annoying.

Since I do not live in the States anymore I do not know who you are referring to, but, poor people do get a raw deal. I want to say something a vet two of my animals used to say that does not really apply to who you are talking about but the title of hating people. He would say that he prefers animals to people any day and that I understand and relate to. There are also good people out there, but, there are a lot of nasty ones too.

@Courtlynn I see very much why. There are people that lie and play games and are not honest and animals you get what you see. They are very honest and let you know what they want and do not play games.
