Loud guitars are definitely going to get their due soon enough, but for the meantime, I am celebrating my love of electronic music with my Favorite Electronic Songs series. #9 in the countdown belongs to "Metal" by Gary Numan. Best known for his 1979 smash hit, "Cars," Gary Numan is a highly influential electronic musician, so much so that nearly every electronic act out there lists him as an inspiration. While "Cars" was an international hit. I've always liked the B-Side, "Metal," better. Even with a highly danceable groove, the song might seem a bit robotic to some. That is probably by design. The tune is, after all, about a robot longing to be human. "Metal" is still, to this day, a Numan concert staple, and has been covered by both Nine Inch Nails, and Afrika Bambaata. I've attached the album version so that you can see for yourself why there is so much fuss over a B-Side. Enjoy! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

It usually happens that way. I think if this had been the era of DJs being autonomous and playing records (I worked in a radio station, all the songs were on tapes similar to the commercials) they probably would have played this as much as "Cars." BTW, did you see the recommendation of Numan doing this with Nine Inch Nails?

In a way, Numan was the Godfather of new wave electronic music.

He is definitely a pioneer. I just as easily went with "Down in the Park." "Metal" has a bit more oomph, though.
