Favorite Electronic Songs #7 - "One of Our Submarines"

Plug in and turn on. It's time for #7 in my Favorite Electronic Songs series, a celebration of electronic music. Why? Because synthesizers are cool! The seventh spot in the countdown belongs to "One of Our Submarines" by Thomas Dolby.
Thomas Dolby is best known for his quirky 1982, #5 hit "She Blinded Me with Science," thus giving him a "one hit wonder" reputation, but his overall body of work is strong (give "Hyperactive!" a listen sometime. That's one fun song!) His follow-up single to "Blinded with Science," "One of Our Submarines," failed to garner the interest of his international smash hit (it's only chart appearance was a #17 peak on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart,) yet, as is often the case, I find it the better song.
While Dolby originally intended the tune for The Thompson Twins, "One of Our Submarines" is personal to him. Dolby's uncle was a crewman on a WWII sub, HMS P48, which, according to the musician, sank during routine maneuvers, although Wikipedia claims that the submarine was lost during combat in the Mediterranean on Christmas Day in 1942.
Either way, as much as I dig The Thompson Twins, I just can't see them pulling this off. "One of Our Submarines" is a Dolby masterpiece.

You're right, it's a better song than "She Blinded Me..." which is a pretty good song! Take Dolby's word for it, Picky Wedia isn't the most reliable source on the planet....

It's the best song on both the Blinded by Science EP and The Golden Age of Wireless album, as far as I'm concerned.

I like "She Blinded Me with Science," but I always liked this one better.

Know the song well. It's somber and moody tone prevented it from mainstream hit status. I am using Dolby and She Blinded... in a future list. I concur. Can't hear the Thompson Twins doing this one.

If they had done it like "Lies," it would have been too upbeat. "Hold Me Now," TOO somber and moody. This was perfect.
