Precious Souls!

My church had several individuals including myself go to a nursing home for the past month on Wednesday nights for an hour. Well I can't rightly describe its effect on me. The elderly are so precious. Their amazing most of them that are with it and some not so with it just sit in their wheelchairs smiling back at you. Oh this one lady just loved hugs and boy was I glad to get one from her. If you have a relative in a nursing home and don't visit them, please I beg you even if its only 5 minutes once a month, once a week would be better for their sakes. I'm going tomorrow to see them again. I have some cute cards I colored that I'm going to pass out to them. I'll offer to pray for them too as Jesus loves them so much and they need to know that. They need to know their family and friends love them too. What do you think about the elderly in nursing homes? Picture by bing.com

When I was younger, I went with a group to a nursing home once a week for quite some time. It's so sad to see how neglected some of them are, but, as you said, many of them have smiles and hugs for those who do come. Even after all these years, I remember some of them clearly. The elderly understand so much more about life than most people know.

@Butchcass4 I hope I don't wind up in one either, but I am at the age where things are beginning to come apart on me and I know my kids can't take care of me all the time, so it could happen. At least I know that God will be there if I do!

@peavey Yes there are the sad stories too. I've heard them over the years and I hope I don't end up in one to be honest with you. Usually they don't have enough CNA's to take care of the elderly, but I believe God looks out for them too!

I so agree. We used to go to nursing homes to sing our Christmas programs as children in elementary school. I always wondered if they liked it, but as an adult, I see they do. My grandmother just moved into an assisted living center, but really it's a better version of a nursing home. I live three hours away and can't stand not seeing her more often. The best thing to come into that nursing home was a local church choir, which my grandmother loved. She talked about them for weeks. I'm so happy you got to do that. It's the kind of ministry that you are perfect for.

@AmbiePam I know there were some people there last Saturday that we're singing hymns and some of the elderly were just soaking it up.

If the nursing home takes good care of them then it is alright but there are some sad situations in nursing homes too. I will put in a prayer for those you know and blessings to you for doing such a wonderful things.

@RasmaSandra Yes I agree the nursing homes need to make sure they take good care of their patients. I believe there is usually a shortage on CNA's and that means people wait around to get care then. But the one I went to seemed to be doing well but I wasn't really there long enough to assess the situation. I was just focused on visiting them.

They're mostly very sad places. I wonder if we think by ignoring the residents there that maybe we won't ever have to be in that situation ourselves.
