I Get to Spend My Sunday in the ER

United States

My sister has been having chest pains a lot lately and her doctor keeps brushing her off as just being anxious without running any tests. So, since these chest pains are making my sister nervous, she decided she should go to the ER and have them rule out anything serious going on with her heart or lungs. I told her I would go with her. I know all too well how scary undiagnosed chest pain can be -- heck, even when you DO know what's causing it, it is still scary! So we will be going to the ER early in the morning when it's hopefully not too busy. And hopefully there is nothing serious that is causing her pain. She says she feels alright now, but she was having some pain earlier. This has been going on for weeks at least, so I'm assuming it's not a heart attack. From the way she's described it, it sounds to me like it might be a digestive issue, but I am no medical expert. Hopefully having the ER check her out will give her some peace of mind so she can quit worrying so much about it, and once she establishes care with a new doctor (she won't be going back to the other one), hopefully they can figure out what's causing her all this grief and do something about it.

Too often, people brush off chest pains as being nothing serious. Especially women, who are more prone to having symptomless heart issues. It's much better to get checked and be on the safe side than to brush it off as nothing serious. Good luck to your sister and I hope everything turns out alright!

That is what's so scary to me about chest pain. I have costochondritis, GERD, a hiatal hernia, and anxiety to boot. But I'm always worried that what if I just write my pain off as one of those things and this time it's my heart? My cardiologist says my heart is fine but stress can also cause heart attacks. Fortunately the ER ruled out any major heart issues with my sister, but I'm encouraging her to have her primary doctor investigate further in case she has some other physical cause to her chest pain. Even if it's just heartburn, if left untreated that can lead to cancer of the esophagus or stomach. Better to cover all her bases and know for sure it's just anxiety and not some other physical problem.

@Srbageldog I agree. Better to investigate further and see if the cause of the pain can be determined. Usually, if things are caught early, they can be effectively treated.

Thank you. I hope so too, even if they just give her peace of mind that there's nothing (seriously) wrong with her heart.

It could be anything, I know one lady that had gallstones and the only thing that happened was chest pain, another with chest pain had lung cancer, but somethings its the heart and she should not wait.

Fortunately it's not her heart or lungs. They seem to think it's anxiety. I told her to let her primary doctor know about the chest pain so they can check out whether it's something like gallstones or a digestive issue (like GERD, which I have.)

That's what I suggested too. I have GERD and it can feel like you're having a heart attack. Not a pleasant disease!
