How Often Have You Moved?

I’ve learned that some people stay in one place all their lives and others move around a lot. Personally, I have moved a LOT. And not always because I wanted to move.
I’m hoping that I will not have to move again, because I am very happy where I am. I have had Driver’s licenses in FIVE U.S. states. West Virginia is where I was born and graduated from high school. Then, I got married and moved to Colorado, Maine, North Carolina and Virginia.
And, as most of you know, I lived in Okinawa, Japan for a year and a half. While I lived in these different places, I didn’t always live in the same house.
In fact, in Colorado, my husband and I moved several times, from apartment to apartment, until we finally found a suitable place. Some of the apartments were really bad. One was infested with roaches. We were out of there very quickly.
Air Force paychecks didn’t allow us much choice, so I went to work as a telephone operator and we could afford a nicer apartment, I’m happy to say.
In North Carolina, we moved several times and then finally bought a house there. But, now I’m back in Virginia.
I actually hated moving so much. Moving is such a chore.
What about you? Have you lived in a lot of different places?

We are about to move again so this will make 40 times in 13 years for me. And before marriage I have moved 3 times, during childhood.
I have lived in NY, NC, Alabama and Florida.

WOW! That's a LOT of moving around. Any particular reasons you've moved that many times? Your husband's job, maybe? My husband was in the Air Force for 8 years.

@IreneVincent Yes it's mostly because in NC there wasn't a lot of work for my husband in remodeling. So he would be lucky to get one job a month usually making us get evicted many times.
Now that we're in FL he's working more so it's better.

@LovingMyBabies That's good that he can find plenty of work in Florida. I guess you plan to stay there in Florida now. There should be plenty of work for him.

No, I'm sure you don't remember that. I do remember the third time my family moved. I was five years old.

@Courtlynn I'm sorry that one of your earliest memories was not a good memory. Traumatic experiences like that must have been, would stick in a child's memory, I'm sure.

I think that most people move from place to place out of necessity.. Either to get away from a bad situation or to find work. Some need a bigger house after they have children and some need a smaller house when their children are grown and move away. Some need a lower rent and some are willing to pay a higher rent for a nicer place if they can afford it.
There are many reasons why people move.

My father was in the Coast Guard, so we moved a lot also. I went to seven schools and lived in five states. Of course, my mother did the packing. I've lived in NC all my married life and in this house for 35 years.

Most military families move a lot. You get used to it, but I think it's particularly difficult for school-age children. We did all our military moving before any of our children were old enough to go to school and then my husband got out of the USAF after 8 years.
After that we still moved more than I wanted to.

Five times as an adult. All in the same area except for a stint in Vegas.

What was it like to live in Las Vegas. I've been there three different times for about a week each time.

@JohnRoberts On one trip to Las Vegas, there was a storm and the main thoroughfare was flooded knee deep. We had gone to a show at the Bellagio on one side of the street and our hotel was on the other side. It was like a swift river coming down the street and we had to wade across. It was very scary.

When I grew up in Minneapolis I grew up in a house that my father had built for us and then when the riots happened my family moved to the suburbs. I hated the suburbs so when I could afford to I moved to an apartment and it got flooded so moved to a studio apartment and loved it and then moved out to get ready for my move to Israel. When I arrived in Israel I moved a to go to a place till the apartment I could move into was ready. Then I stayed longer in places but when got married we moved to one place and the landlord was selling the apartment so had to move and stayed there a year and then we moved to where I stayed till moved to where i live now. I always lived in Jerusalem. I stayed 17 years till moved to my present location. I loved the place where we lived in the beginning and then started to hate it and when I could afford to and someone I know has an apartment where I live now told me about it so I talked to the landlord and took it and have been here 5 years and hope can stay till I am too old to take care of myself and my cat. I hate moving too. It was a horrible experience this last time and people were horrible.
