The song “I Can’t Stop Loving You” became a number one hit in 1962 for R & B legend Ray Charles. During his fantastic career he gained the nickname “the Genius”. It was a great loss to the musical world when Charles died in 2004. He was constantly astounding everyone with his knack for knowing just the kind of music everyone would enjoy. He released a landmark album titled Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music and it was this album that included the number one hit. The album was a best seller and stayed on the Billboard charts for 14 weeks. It was Ray Charles brilliant idea in 1962 to re-record some of the best country music songs of the previous 20 years in his own particular style. While the executives at ABC Records insisted that Charles would lose his fans he went on to prove them wrong and the songs that he recorded wound up on both the Pop and R & B charts. All of this just confirmed that Charles was correct when he stated that there are only two kinds of music – good and bad. During his childhood he had always been surrounded by the sounds of jazz, blues, gospel and country. As it turned out his album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music became the biggest selling album of 1962 and “I Can’t Stop Loving You” became the biggest pop hit of Ray Charles’s career. How many Ray Charles fans out there? http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/ray-charles-takes-country-music-to-the-top-of-the-pop-charts

Georgia on My Mind and Hit the Road Jack were also Billboard Hot 100 #1's for Charles.
