Lessons I learned from instructing a belly dance class

Back in 2010-2011 I taught a belly dance class - rather unwillingly.  Why unwilling you ask?   I had been in a troupe that failed -- and had found these belly dance classes, and met a fantastic bunch of women.  However that instructor ended up moving out of the area.  I tried to interest people in getting together to watch belly dance videos (instructional) - but that didn't go over.  So I did the only thing I could think of to keep this awesome group of people together - so I started teaching as I had experience in a different style than they did.  Well it took them a year to catch up to me, and I had nothing new to show them.  Sure I would have people come and go, drift in and out of the classes but the "core" group remained the same.  At the time they began expressing an interest to move on from my style of teaching we had become good enough friends that we kept in touch and formed our own troupe together. I learned that people take a dance class for all different reasons.  For exercise, for the art of it, or for the hopes to perform.   I learned that some people like to learn routines, and some people like to learn moves.  I learned that some people like to be critiqued, and others will complain when you critique them after they ask you to do so.  I learned that everyone has some amount of body issues.   Dance is a wonderful experience and I hope that you get a chance to take class in whatever style suits you if you feel lead to do so.  Photo: Of me

My wifi is awful. I don't see my response here, so I'll write it again. I learned how to belly dance and still remember it all. I've never performed in public. Super photo!!!!

You are so lovely in the photo Faye!!! Thanks for sharing with us. When I was younger I would have loved to learn belly dancing. I wouldn´t have time now, but what a great exercise that must be!

Aw shucks, thank you! I hope you get time to learn if you feel inclined. It's great exercise, similar to low impact aerobics

@FayeHazel no it was my husband, the man has no rhythm and doesn't know his right from his left, so you can imagine how it went lol

Oh that's too bad, it sounds like a case of bad instruction. The tango looks amazing... so pretty

I'm afraid I'm not a dancer and don't see myself ever taking lessons.

That's a great photo of you. I've often admired belly dancers, but know it's not for me.

Ah -- there is a "posture trick" that enables you to move like that... trick is simple enough but some people don't teach it.

I love to dance but lately I am becoming more shy about dancing than when I was younger. I am not a good dancer but that never bothered me before. Strange! I also enjoy watching good dancers perform.

@FayeHazel You are right! Do you have a video on YouTube of one of your dance classes?

Aw, there is no reason to be shy. I agree - no need to be a "good" dancer as long as you're having fun.

If I could only do dancing as exercise, I don't have time for diet and small exercise video anymore.

I have never tried belly dancing but if I did I would probably be clumsy at it - lol.

It's been over ten years since I last danced. Not sure I'll ever do so again. No lessons for me!
