I am sure that there are many people who have heard about or studied about the Battle of Gettysburg in school. It all happened in the U.S. during the Civil War in the state of Pennsylvania.
It was July 3, 1863 and the troop under the command of Confederate General George Pickett started a massive attack against the Union lines center. The Battle of Gettysburg was on and for the first two days of fighting General Robert E. Lee with the Army of Northern Virginia managed to batter George Meade’s Army of the Potomac.
Finally came the third of July and Lee choose to attack the Union center who were stationed on Cemetery Ridge. Altogether there were 15, 000 attackers that included other units as well. The Confederates began with artillery bombardment and then the Rebel forces moved through an open field and up the rise of Cemetery Ridge. Unfortunately once they reached the Union line the attack had been broken up into many smaller units and they couldn’t get through the Yankee center.
The failed attack managed to end the Battle of Gettysburg and on July 4, Lee started withdrawing his forces to Virginia. There were amazing casualties on both sides. Lee lost 28,000 of his 75,000 soldiers and the Union lost more than 22,000. This was the last time that Lee attempted to threaten the Northern territory.
I realize that if some kind of battle like this had taken place in more modern times with modern weaponry must likely practically all of the soldiers on both sides would have been wiped out. What do you think?
