More fascinating things that happened the year I was born: 75 years ago. 1. Producers of food stuffs, began the process of adding vitamins and minerals to milk, cereal and other foods, leading to the birth of “Wonder Bread.” 2. The $200 million Colorado Aqueduct began sending WATER 250 miles south, into Los Angeles and other California cities. 3. Unfortunately, it was also the year that AEROSOL SPRAY cans were introduced. Goodbye OZONE layer! 4. Another unfortunate happening: Lou Gehrig died that year. Lou Gehrig was a famous baseball player who died from ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. 5. This was a real, but pleasant, surprise to me: Way back then, 75 years ago, long before Civil Rights clashes began in later decades, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Black persons were entitled to first-class services on railroad trains. Arthur W. Mitchell, elected to the House of Representatives, brought this case before the Supreme Court after HE was removed from a coach car and seated in second class as his train approached Arkansas.
