New York City JFK Airport

I will be going to NYC next month to take a cruise and am not familiar with JFK airport.
A friend suggests that I take AirTran to and from. My cruise consultant suggests Airporter.
For all you mylotters who live in NYC or have been, what would you suggest coming from and going to JFK.

I haven't been through JFK in two decades so I have no advice.

Better check with the agency. It is very different if you land on the local part of the airport than if you are a passenger from another country.
