We are nearing the end of my Favorite "Direction" Songs series, which is songs with either "north," "south," "east," or "west" in the title. #3 in the countdown belongs to "Wild West" by Joe Jackson. "Wild West" is the leadoff track from Jackson's 1986 live album, Big World. The album is unique for a few reasons. The album itself consists of all original songs, for one thing. The audience members were all invited, and were asked to remain quiet and withhold applause until the songs were absolutely finished, giving the record the energy of live performance without the distraction of the crowd. It's also just a three-sided album, sold as a four-sided record, for the price of a two-sided release. As far as "Wild West" goes, it's an album cut, nothing more (albeit, a good one.) I don't remember ever hearing it on the radio, nor can I find any evidence it was released as a single. But it's Joe Jackson. Any chance I get to use him in one of my music countdowns, I will take it. And he's going to rank highly. Everytime. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

Joe who? Wasn't he shoeless and played for the White Sox in 1919? (You probably didn't lose any sleep worrying about whether or not I'd give this one a big honkin' thumbs up....)

Thumbs up from a fellow new wave 80s fan. And Joe was considered a member of that world.

His first two albums are new wave classics, before he went into swing, big band, jazz, etc. A musical genius.
