I Presented a Rock to a Stranger and She Thanked Me

Yup, I found a rock today and set it aside. I then waited for someone to come along and gave them the rock, asking them "can you use this?" They happily nodded their head and accepted the rock, before thanking me and rushing off. It felt nice to bring a smile to someone's face. Okay, so you might be wondering about said rock, so here it is: there is some kind of summer event where sponsors buy painted rocks and distribute them around town and hide them in plain sight at times. Kids a certain age group find said rocks and trade them in to various stores in the area for rewards. The rock I found this time was the biggest I've seen yet, and it was covered in little painted flowers. It's the 4th type of painted rock I've seen this summer. I gave it to some random girl as she was walking by, and she knew what to do with it, and rushed off to trade it in for whatever it is they get, whether it's a drink or snack of some sort. I think it is a good experience for the kids. After all, when was they last time you made someone happy by presenting them with a rock?

That is awesome! You made a young girl happy and her smile will always be with you. The last time I gave a rock to someone was to my oldest grandson. He has autism and loves to collect rocks. Well I do have a small rock collection myself and he seen one that he really liked. So as they were getting ready to leave I placed the rock in his hand. He was so happy. Yes, I was pretty fond of that rock but I was happy just to be able to make him happy. That meant a lot more to me.

@OneOfMany I have some fossil rocks also. I have my rocks sitting among my plants. They are neat. I bet your uncles waterfalls are neat. That just gave me an idea.

My uncle has a thing for large rocks, but he used to use them to build waterfalls. I like fossil rocks. Finding rocks with ancient shells on them are fun. This area used to be the eastern edge of an inland sea, so there's lots of fossilized shells here.

I agree. I think it's fun for the kids. It's like an extended treasure hunt all summer long.

They are pretty rocks, and these are nicely placed and traded in for rewards. I wonder if there is a competition among those that are handed the stones?

Neat! I have heard of people doing rock painting and leaving them around. But I didn't realize stores picked up on the idea and added trading it in for a prize - ah, smart (of course everything ends up being commercialized somehow). In any case, finding such a rock would make a kid happy I'm sure . . . how wonderful you made it happen for that girl!

Originally I thought it was a piece of garbage (like a wrapper on the ground) while I was working. After I nudged it with my foot I discovered that it was one of those rocks. Funnily enough, one of those rocks will never be found by anyone, because one of the masonry guys working on a building project picked one up and dropped it into a pillar he was working on, then sealed it up. I guess in a way, that one's become a time capsule.

I found a painted rock at the seaside last week. I love finding little things like that.

You can see that people have devoted a lot of time to some of these designs, and the kids certainly have been outside more this summer in part to some motivation.

Would love to see an example. I am curious now... Can't imagine a rock with little painted flowers. Was it pretty?

It was pretty enough for a painted rock. It's not like the details were minute, but it was easy to understand the image.

I didn't know that. Because I never really knew you can give colored rocks as present.

Well, it is part of a program. Anything has importance as long as you yourself add the value to it.
