In director Ivan Reitman's 1981 comedy film, Stripes, John Winger (Bill Murray) decides to join the Army after losing his job and his girlfriend in one day. He talks his best friend, Russell Ziskey (Harold Ramis) into joining with him, and off they go to basic training, where Winger immediately gets on his Drill Instructor, Sgt. Hulka's (Warren Oates) bad side.
After Sgt. Hulka gets injured by a morter round, the platoon ends up completing boot camp on their own, impressing General Barnicke (Robert J. Wilke) enough that he sends the men to Europe to test the Army's new Urban Assault Vehicle.
After John and Russell borrow the vehicle to go to Germany and party with their girlfriend's (P.J. Soles, Sean Young,) the rest of the platoon ends up in Czechoslovakia, where they are captured. It's up to Winger and Ziskey to rescue them.
Stripes is quite funny, with a strong supporting cast that includes John Candy, John Larroquette, and Judge Reinhold (John Candy is particularly hilarious.)
Stripes is one of those movies that I've watched about a hundred times without getting tired of it. (And yes, I've used the Aunt Jemima treatment on a girl. It really does work!)
If, by chance, you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.
Rated R for brief nudity.

I saw that movie back in the day. I think I liked Private Benjamin better though.

Now that movie I did see. Goldie Hawn was the main character I think. Yea. I rode my bike to the Redbird Theater one afternoon and went inside, bought pop corn and cola and enjoyed that movie. It is coming back to me now. I actually remember it. Been a long time since that day and have not seen much of Goldie Hawn except recently in a movie where she and her daughter, the characters that is, got kidnapped while on vacation in South America in the movie Snached.

Half of it was filmed not too far from where I live and in Ft. Knox. John Larroquette, who has gone on to win five Emmy awards and a Tony, said that he didn't remember filming Stripes because he was heavily drinking at the time. He broke his nose during the scene where he discovers the EM50 is missing but didn't even feel it because he was so, ahem, "medicated."
Love the stuffing out of this movie, but then I am a lean, mean fighting machine.

Thumbs up! A funny boot camp movie. Murray was really on top of his game in the 80s.
