Do You Carry a Purse?

I was responding to another person on mylot and thought that I should share this information with everyone.
She had written that she and her husband had heard a woman screaming and rushed to see what was happening and someone had stolen her purse and ran off with it.
So I said:
That's exactly why I don't carry a purse. I put my money, driver's license and whatever I need in a small zippered leather pouch and carry it on my body out of sight. In the car I have other items if I need them. They are also hidden and out of sight.
I have seen purses snatched right off of a woman's shoulder more than once. I travel a lot so I have learned what NOT to do.
In Spain, a group of us were standing on the sidewalk near our hotel, waiting for a few more to catch up with us and a guy came by on a motorcycle and grabbed a purse right off the shoulder of one of the women and kept going.
In her purse, was all of her money, her credit cards, her passport and who knows what else. Even though the police were called, she never got any of her belongings back. And she had to go through so much, just to get her passport replaced so she could come home to the USA.
In another instance, on a trip to Lake Tahoe, a friend of mine took all her things just mentioned along with her rental car keys, prescriptions and her eyeglasses in her purse, rafting on the Truckee River. The raft overturned and her purse went down the river never to be seen again.
Another friend sat her purse on the floor at our hotel in Chicago to get her photo taken with the President of our Jewelry company. When she turned around, her purse was gone. And she had just been awarded over $2500 in prize money, which was in her purse. So, needless to say, I learned that lesson.

Better safe than sorry. I see women leaving their purses in shopping carts also, while they shop for groceries or even in department stores. And they walk away from their cart to look at something. It only takes a few seconds for someone to take advantage of that.

Fanny packs used to be very popular, but even they are not the safest, especially if they can be seen.

I haven't used a purse in ages. When I go shopping I have a small bag with a strap I put around my shoulders and put my wallet in that and hold it in front of me.
