Every morning when I get out of bed I take a moment to be thankful for all of my abilities. I am someone who truly believes that everyone is good at something. When I was teaching middle school I made sure that the students all knew that there was something they were good at doing. Many of them came to me thinking they were a failure. I would have laughed at the notion of being a failure at the grand old age of 12 or 13 years old if I knew it wouldn't hurt their feelings. Somehow these kids thought that they were not good at anything. Everyone has a talent of one sort or other. All they have to do is look for it. We would spend time with finding out everyone's talent. Some are good at making others feel good, some are good at telling jokes. It is sometimes hard for children to understand that there is something they can shine at. What makes me stop and think is the fact that so many of them would get the notion of not being good at anything from their own parents This is terrible. A parent is supposed to build up the child not tear them down. Thank goodness there are many parents who do build their child up and help them believe in themselves I am truly thankful for those parents for they are the ones who are shaping the child into a person who will someday be running our country.

I think a lot of kids are told or shown that they are failures because of words, actions or comments made by their parents.

I do agree. I now people are busy but a little bit of time spent with the child can make a world of difference.

@HazySue Exactly, it makes me so sad to see children who grow up in that sort of environment,

They need to hold up their end of the raising of their child. They are so important.

Typically a teacher will spend more time with the child than a parent. Both are so important on helping a child know that they matter and help them believe in themselves.

You seem to have a belief in yourself. Someone must have told you you were a good person.

@HazySue not really.but I do believe in my self. As you can see most of my life is just about over. Friends are gone.So any name of anything I could care less.I know what I am. Happy, etc. These kids have a whole life ahead of them.If they cannot make up their minds or folk to help them. I am glad that I was not born in this generation.

I work with kids on a daily basis, and sadly, many of them at the ripe old age of 13 have given up all hope on life, solely because their parents have given up on them, or do nothing to build them up. We do our best to restore hope in these kids, but we only work with them for a few hours a day. We build them up, but then they go home and get beaten back down again by their parents. So sad.

@HazySue It's sad how many parents these days refuse to take responsibility for raising their children.

I have seen many that have given up on life. Parents need to take a more active role in building up their child. It is sad.

Well said and well done! I agree wholeheartedly. I found it to be a viscous cycle with the students and their parents whom I worked with. Then again, there were those shining stars!

There is always a shining star somewhere in the group. I worked with special needs children and it is so sad how beaten down these kids are.

I honestly think some kids do hear it from their parents but some seem to be born thinking they are no good. It is awful. My oldest son has no self confidence even though he's told all the time how smart, loving, sweet and handsome he is. Not sure why he feels this way but no one puts him down here, it's heart breaking.

It is heartbreaking. Sometimes the parent can do everything right and still this will happen. It is so sad. If you could find that one thing that he excels at maybe it will help.
