Soda Bottle Recycling

When I was a kid, I remember we used to be able to turn in glass Coke bottles and receive 5c. My friends and I used to collect them and go to the store together to get a few cents and then spend it on penny candy. Of course all that is now a thing of the past (penny candy included).
With the advent of PET bottles we have seen a rise in people just throwing them away because we don't get a benefit from them. However, they can be recycled and made into various things, such as thread and cloth. I think we should recycle without thinking about benefit to us.
Recently, one of the stores in our city has put up a PET bottle recycling machine. It gives us points and when we get up to 500 points, then we get 50 yen (about 50c) on our prepaid store card. Each bottle is worth 2 points so it takes a long time to get up to 500 points! I'm taking a few bottles in today after I write this! I think I will get about 30 points today.
Do you have recycling incentives in your country?

That's one of the things i do, I buy scrap pet bottles, the price here now is down, approx 7 pesos per kilo or around. 14 cents, take out the caps and neck rings and you get more, its so bulky 400 kilos if not pressed can fill a high side cargo truck, another use for it is to make rain coat material

@TiarasOceanView I miss those days too when we were raising our 2 sons.
We put a lot of efforts into that and today we are rewarded with them being 2 good solid citizens.

That few cents earning is nothing compared by the aim of your government- doing something to solve Global Warming. That is a very nice environmental program!

when i crave a coke, i walk down to the store and buy a small bottle (glass), and take it home. when i return the glass bottle, they'll give me 2 pesos.

That's a good strategy to make customers return the bottles. I think Japan is more in this activity than any other country

Very few in the place where I stay...These pet bottles land up on the rubbish heap.
Of course people pick them up and sell them to as a bulk ...But nothing like what you described
