Former New York Yankees infielder, manager and general manager Gene Michael passed away on Thursday due to a heart attack. Michael, 79, was the former general manager of the New York Yankees who built the "Core Four" Yankees players who are Andy Petitte, Mariano "Mo" Rivera, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada during the 1990s. Michael was nicknamed "Stick" to his body build who was a great defensive infielder in the Major Leagues from 1966-1975. Michael worked with the Yankees front office from 1996 until he passed away after the late George Steinbrenner who was the owner of the team fired him as general manager of the Yankees in 1995. The irony is that while Steinbrenner was serving his suspension in 1990 by former Major League Baseball commissioner Fay Vincent for paying gambler Vincent Spira $40,000 to find something bad from his outfielder Dave Winfield. Michael was able to build the Yankees dynasty of the 1990s without his boss meddling into his business dealings.

I always thought it was Brian Cashman who built up the Yankees dynasty. Nevertheless Gene did his best work as the general manager of the Yankees from 1990-1995. He will be missed beyond words by the Yankees Nation.

Michael was a longtime baseball man, a vanishing breed.
