No free Krispy Kreme donuts this year

For the first year in a long time, Krispy Kreme is not doing their annual Talk Like A Pirate Day promotion. In the past, you could get a free donut if you used a pirate phrase, or a dozen free donuts if you showed up in pirate garb. This picture is of some of my family members on their way to Krispy Kreme two years ago. We made bread pudding for breakfast a couple of days later out of some of the donuts, because there's just no way we could consume 4 dozen donuts on our own! But no free donuts today, so likely no one in our household will be dressing up. I've heard that Long John Silver's is giving away a free deep fried Twinkie to anyone who uses a pirate phrase, but I think we'll pass on the Twinkies.

Aw what a shame then Kelli. Is everyone in your family dressed like pirates in the photo today? It is very cute. Long John Silvers should do something for pirates day.. oh friend twinkies huh?

No one is dressed up today (so far) because we all forgot what day it was until a little bit ago.

@TiarasOceanView It's from 2015. My youngest daughter seems to react to eating wheat, so we didn't go out for free donuts last year.

A deep fried Twinkie? Yow, that sounds like an unhealthy option!:(

@spiderdust I was wondering why they didn't offer fish or chicken!

@kobesbuddy I'm sure it's cost related. They make most of their money on the meat products, where a Twinkie is a much cheaper item.

Yeah, and not one that interests me. I've had one before, at the Santa Cruz boardwalk. Once was enough. Now if they were giving away free pieces of fish or chicken planks, we'd be in line right now.

@spiderdust I know it does cost them but they do make a lot of money too. Well, maybe some other business will start doing something to keep the spirit going.

I imagine it cost them a lot of money. I don't know if they made any sales, just had people waiting in line for boxes and boxes of free donuts.

I've never had a deep fried Twinkie. Sounds good.

It's not as good as I expected it to be, as the filling in the middle gets hot and changes texture.

I don't eat them very much anymore myself, and there are ones I like better than the plain glazed ones anyway (which are what the freebies always were in the past).
