School Field Trips From My Childhood: Fifth Grade

United States

In fifth grade we went to the movies and saw Tall Tale starring Patrick Swayze. I was a big Patrick Swayze fan so I was very excited about this. Alyson and I snuck in snacks and we tried to hide the fact that we were eating non-theater food from one of the other fifth grade teachers, Mr. Sawyer, as he was roaming the aisles in search of any outside food. We managed to not get caught. Again we went bowling the day before Christmas break and the last day of school. The day before the last day of school we had a swim party at a local health club, and all of us fifth graders got to walk there. I brought my walkman and I was very happy listening to the golden oldies station while hanging out next to the pool. Alyson and I spent a good portion of the day pigging out on the snacks that were set out (after inhaling a gluttonous amount of barbecue hamburgers and hot dogs that Mr. Sawyer grilled.) Chandra got mad that we ate all the chocolate dip and didn't save any for anyone else. (We were dipping everything in it -- fruit, graham crackers, even raw veggies.) When I went home I discovered the tops of my feet were sunburned. It was a good day. (Thanks again to @Courtlynn for the inspiration for this post series.)

@allen0187 It's too bad you didn't get to have one.

Yes, it was forbidden to bring in outside food. But I was poor and couldn't afford movie snacks! The pool party was a big deal in fifth grade, like a goodbye party for all us kids as we moved on to middle school.

@Srbageldog my 5th grade class did too. As my 5th grade teacher had us raise eggs into chickens! Plus the week long trip.

Yes they did. And these are just the things I remember at the moment; there could have been more. Back then field trips didn't have to be educational either.
