I didn’t even know this but the national insect of Latvia is a two-point ladybug. I have seen ladybugs here but with lots of dots. Ladybugs are good at protecting plants from pests. What is interesting is that this ladybug in Latvian is referred to as marite because of the Latvian highest-ranking goddess Mara or Mother Earth. Mara has also become a popular name for girls in Latvia. the photo is of a drawing of Mara

I read somewhere about the 5 or seven spot ladybird (yeah, that US vs UK English thing again!) being something to do with the Virgin Mary from the Bible... Interesting it is a "national insect" in Latvia.

I don't think we have any national insects!
